Thanks, Fossils, for this interesting article. I never really thought about these things; I guess referring to Skyrim was a good way to get your point across. I don't play video games but Skyrim sounds familiar as I think my son used to play it.
Now, about that mini-conversation between Toohey and Roark. It is hard to know if Roark is just a vain, disturbed, 4-star jerk who likes making people uncomfortable, or if he is entitled to make such a cruel, mocking remark to Toohey. We would have to have some back story or at least more of the prior conversation to decide.
While I haven't read the book The Fountainhead, I am familiar with it and the ideas that Rand is trying to put forth. All of which has made me contemptuous of objectivism. Indeed, without a word of a lie - an Objectivist spoke to a person I know in such a manner as Roark did, mentioning that he was quoting "a character in The Fountainhead". The recipient of this contempt did not deserve it, based on the rest of the conversation which I heard. He remained silent in the face of this self-righteous nastiness.
Yes, Fossils should distinguish contempt as an emotion promoting avoidance versus feigned contempt as a method of bullying for attaining dominance over a rival of equal or greater merit.
I love a titling challenge so here are two ideas. Not sure if either works but I´ll offer them for thought.
an evolution-based WHY for every emotion
every human emotion and urge explained through an evolutionary lens
I don't think I can do better than "an evolution-based WHY for every emotion" from "Becoming the Rainbow", but a couple of ideas:
- How evolution shaped our everyday life
- A guide of the strings that move us
Subtitle suggestion: “better living through psychology”
