The cure for this is to be loyal to first principles, not the second order proxy. So, if we are loyal to, say, democrazy, we should evaluate actions from the principle of democracy. But human nature being what it is, people chose to be loyal to its proxys. So if some group who call themselves 'society for advancement of democrazy' emerges, people will be loyal to that. And then to something adjacent or third order, like the leader for this group. This is how all civilizations rot, by people substituting the first principle with its proxys. Just a penseee from me
